Staving Artist Woodwork

Penn Yan, New York

Dan and his partner, Rachel, love showing wine enthusiasts how wine barrels and reclaimed wood can become beautiful and unique accents in their homes. Dan started creating his own designs in the basement of his house using recycled Finger Lakes wine barrels in 2005. A true small-business success story, Staving Artist has expanded multiple times, with financing help from the FLEDC, culminating with the opening of their own retail shop on Main Street in Penn Yan.

In 1986 Abtex purchased the old Dresden Elementary School building and relocated its young Rochester-based business to Yates County. For the past 33 years Abtex, with help from the FLEDC, has grown the business to 35+ people shipping advanced deburring systems and deburring consumables around the world. Abtex has relied on the local area to provide a highly skilled workforce including accounting, sales, marketing, engineering (electrical, mechanical, controls), manufacturing and assembly.

The FLEDC believes that small businesses drive the economy and has made Yates County a veritable hub for entrepreneurship. We have helped more than 100 small businesses — from retail shops to manufacturers to artisan workshops — get off the ground via low-interest loans, grants, low-cost space and business planning assistance.

Wine and grape foundation moving to Penn Yan

The New York Wine and Grape Foundation is moving from Canandaigua to Penn Yan. The foundation, a trade and marketing organization for grapes and wine, has been located in Canandaigua since the New York Wine and Culinary Center - now known as New York Kitchen - opened in 2006.
